Itinerary Details

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe and Canopy Walk Adventure

  • Morning: Depart from Kigali at 6:00 AM for a scenic 5-6 hour drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park, with a brief stop for lunch en route.
  • Afternoon: Arrive at the Uwinka Visitor Center by 2:00 PM. After checking into your accommodation, head out at 3:00 PM for the canopy walk. This 200-meter-long, 60-meter-high suspension bridge provides stunning views of the forest canopy, with chances to spot primates and birds.
  • Evening: Return to your lodge for dinner and a restful overnight stay, preparing for the next day’s adventure.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking and Bird Watching

  • Early Morning: Wake up at 4:00 AM for a quick breakfast, then head to the park headquarters by 5:00 AM for a briefing. Begin your chimpanzee trek at 6:00 AM, guided by expert rangers through the forest trails (Uwinka or Cyamudongo trail). Spend one hour observing the chimpanzees once located.
  • Mid-Morning: After the trek, return to the starting point for a packed lunch and a short break.
  • Afternoon: Embark on a guided bird-watching walk, exploring Nyungwe’s diverse avian life, including species like the Rwenzori Turaco and Great Blue Turaco. Depart Nyungwe by 2:00 PM for the return journey to Kigali, arriving by 7:00-8:00 PM.

Transportation

  • Private 4x4 safari vehicle with an English-speaking driver/guide for transfers between Kigali and Nyungwe Forest National Park. A 4x4 is recommended for the Cyamudongo trail due to rough terrain.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk 2-6 hours, depending on chimpanzee locations, with some steep inclines.
  • Minimum age for chimpanzee trekking is 15; canopy walk minimum age is 6 (children must be accompanied by an adult).
  • Recommended gear: sturdy hiking boots, long-sleeved clothing, rain gear, insect repellent, and binoculars for bird watching. Walking sticks are provided by the park.
